All for the glory of whitetail hunting. At least in this era of big game hunting, that’s definitely what we hear, read and see the most about.
And hey listen-- no arguments from me because I guess whitetails have indeed earned the right to be called the American hunter’s favorite prize.
All the reasons aside for today, their popularity certainly should never over-shadow everything there is to appreciate about the whitetail’s western cousin and the great thrill associated with mule deer hunting.
I mean, “how do I love mullies—let me count the ways!”
I love that irregular, bouncing, gate and the way they prance away—out of sight in a moment’s notice…hunting them in the rolling western foothills and high country terrains where they live…the extremely difficult challenge of getting close-- especially to the biggest, most instinctively evasive bucks…and the way, even from a distance, mule deer racks look so incredibly tall, wide and massive.
Ha-ha…sorry Mr. whitetail, but yes…I do mean compared to you.
This week, however, we’ll be visiting a place in Montana, where both trophy whitetail and mule deer bucks are able to be had-- the rolling, pine-studded, foothills near Musselshell, MT, where fall deer patterns have much to do with daily movements to and from lowland hayfields and grassy feeding areas.
Kristeen, myself and our daughter Karlee are finally off to Montana together and seriously looking forward to some classic Mule deer hunting with an ever-present crack at a giant whitetail always a possibility. So be sure to stay with us and tag along to see what happens okay?
